How to Easily Save $650 This Month…And Lose Weight By Using the “Automatic System”
You Already Know What You Need to Do to Save Money or Lose Weight… But Have You Done it?
How much money have you saved over the past 6 months, even though you planned on saving and know you need to?
How many action steps have you taken towards improving your health, even though you planned on it and know you need to?
As it turns out, personal finance and health are often identical in their problems – we know what we should be doing… but we just aren’t doing it. Why!?
Interestingly enough, the Dutch did a large scale study on people who planned to save (and ended up saving), and then compared them to people who planned to save but didn’t.
The results shocked me – it’s almost identical to a discussion I might have with a person trying to lose weight.
The researchers concluded that relying on “willpower and discipline” were “failing” strategies. And that the people who really succeeded in saving money (aka losing weight) set up systems that bypassed willpower.
Check out today’s video where I’ll share with you exactly what the researchers did, what this all has to do with weight loss, and how you can apply it to your own efforts to improve your health.
Before you go…
Leave a comment below telling me what you can automate in your own health efforts.
What kind of systems can you set up that help you bypass willpower, and automatically help you make progress every month?
What is one habit in particular you’d like to change? Tell me below.

Nice, I think this would help people like me who need to gain weight as well.
Hey Ben,
Haha yeah absolutely. I’ve personally used a similar method to gain weight. I think it all comes back to creating good systems – rather than relying on willpower.
Hi Alex, being a student on a low income I already do a budget for what I will spend each week but I think it’s a great idea to have a programmed day each week to follow up on what money is actually being spent, and where.
Hey Laura,
Yeah this system literally changed my financial life. I’ve used something very similar for improving health (or reaching health goals) – try it out!

Hi Alex,
If this is about forming habits, then I’m in trouble. I have ADHD and things just pretty much go out the window once I forget about them. I procrastinate a lot so I hope I get started to even set up on that automated system. Out of sight, out of mind. But I really like your idea of bypassing willpower. So I’m gonna have to figure out a way to do that with the ADHD not screwing it up.
Btw, I only just saw you in this video. You look really cute 😉
I’ve been reading your emails and I didn’t expect that I would totally agree with you. I’ve been exercising crazily and starving myself before and not losing weight. Now I’m doing almost nothing following your advice and my friends are dumbfounded on how I’m doing it.
Anyway thanks a lot!
Hey Natalia,
Nope! This one is about systems, to bypass the need to “remember” anything.
Awesome! I’m glad to hear you aren’t starving yourself anymore and you’re still seeing results. Shoot me an email if you have any questions –

Hi Alex
Everything you say makes a lot of sense when dealing with money and I do something very similar.
But thinking about 3 years from now and not eating X is going to benefit me in 3 years, doesn’t cut it for me. I need something that’s going to benefit me in 3 years but is also going to show an improvement in my weight in the next 5-10 days.
Chris
Hi Chris,
That makes a lot of sense ,and I totally hear you. The truth though is that changing your habits can also result in quick weight loss – e.g. dropping wheat often makes people feel a lot better, and they lose a lot of weight.
Try to find the quick wins in addition to the long-term solutions whenever possible.

I love this. I am a fabulous saver, but I never thought about applying the principle to health and weight loss. I forgo many things that most people who are struggling to save money seem to believe are necessary to a full life. One of my strategies is to ask myself things like, “Do I want a nicer phone or would I enjoy a day trip when I retire?” Turns out, I usually want to do a few fun things in retirement. I’ve got a lot of day trips planned! Great idea. Thanks.
Cheers Tawnia 🙂
You have a good plan there. I tried something like that and it worked. Now I got to get back on board and continue. Thinking years ahead is probably going to work for me.
Cheers Norm!
Hi Alex,
very interesting but still a bit tricky to automate in a busy life. I think I’ll try and put tubs of raw veggies, and cooked chicken in the fridge for when I’m peckish. Maybe that could be my Sunday ritual.
Awesome MrsM!
Just start with tiny tiny habits, rituals and systems :).
I have a plan to stop me wasting so much time watching videos, I disabled Flashplayer so I can’t watch even if I try. Oh wait… Was there anything in this that had to be video? I’m going to guess not.
Working on not eating after dinner now. My next big habit is eating reasonable portions at dinner.
Love it Todd! Let me know how it works out.
I love saving but never knew i could use same for weight loss. Thanks for the information. I will try out same as see how it works.
You’re welcome Helen!
well ilike the idea started saying this year. automatically move money every month when paid so its gone from account . soon adds up. i like idea of prepared snacks in fridge
I love the idea of making Sunday healthy shopping and cooking day! That could truly change my life. Right now I am thinking of how Tuesday night after a long day of work and picking up kids how hard it was to go to the store even with my detailed list- if I could do that trip ALONE on a Sunday with more prep time for the list and for making stuff afterwards it would revolutionize my life!
Awesome Amanda, let me know how this works for you!
Eat less cookies!
I would like to become more consistent in seeing things through.
I like the idea of looking at my finances once a week. With weight loss, maybe walking 1000 more steps per week and keep adding every week.
Love it Tricia!
