But it matters what you do with the pain – use it to reinvent yourself, or pacify yourself with your choice of drug (medicine)?
As I see it, there are three steps:
Step 1: Be in pain.
The starting point of all change is usually pain. Self-hatred. Life-hatred. Feeling exhausted with the way things have been going. Feeling tired of feeling tired. Feeling tired of seeing the same person in the mirror, or waking up and doing the same routine over and over.
Step 2: Be conscious about the pain (realize that you have pain and know what it’s from).
It’s not enough just to be in pain.
I can wake up and be grumpy every day, but unless I know why, how can I change? Is it my job? My relationship? Or in this case, my physical body and health?
I am constantly unhappy because I’m disgusted by what I see in the mirror every day.
Step 3: Choose to reinvent yourself with the pain (e.g. channel it), and not subdue it.
Plenty of people feel disgusted with themselves and choose the easy way out – self-medication. Netflix. Alcohol. Drugs. Food. The easy way is to just turn off the feelings and not deal with them. But what’s easy now, becomes hard later.
Do what’s hard now, and it will become easy later.
Choose your pain.
Be conscious about it.
And use it as the fuel for building an incredible life (and body).
